The Harlem Renaissance
The Harlem Renaissance or the New Negro Movement was a cultural movement in the 20s. It originated in the predominantly African America neighborhood of Harlem, New York. One of the central bases of the movement was racial pride, all African Americans coming together to get involved, assist each other, and support themselves. Some credit can be given to writers and intellectuals like Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Marcus Garvey, and Alain Locke. African American writers used their creativity by creating their own writing styles, rather than imitating European ones.
